"If I were a fatalist, or a mystic, which I decidedly am not, it might
be appropriate to say I believe in my lucky star. But I reject 'luck.'
I feel every person creates his own 'determinism' by discovering his
best aptitudes and following them undeviatingly."

I've heard the same thing, and I believe the story. I've read multiple biographies written about him, and he supposedly attempted suicide twice.
They even made light of it in The Rat Pack when Peter Lawford (Angus Macfadyen) was telling Rocky Cooper (Veronica Cartwright) how crazy Frank was and offered to tell her the gory details about it.
And now...

I love this song. lot. There's a shadow just behind me,
shrouding every step I take,
making every promise empty,
pointing every finger at me.
Waiting like a stalking butler
who upon the finger rests.
Murder now the path is must we
just because the son has come.
Jesus, won't you ****ing whistle
something but the past and done? (x2)
Why can we not be sober?
I just want to start this over.
Why can't we dream forever?
I just want to start things over.
Strange days have found us
