(Nov 11, 2009): Nationals sign relief pitcher, Taylor Buchholz to a $8.8m deal over 2 years. In 51 appearances, Buchholz was 7-3 with a 4.71 ERA last season.

(Jan 3, 2010): Nationals catcher Jesus Flores is still recovering from a broken wrist that cut his season short June 14th. He is expected to make a full recovery and should join the team halfway through spring training. Backup catcher, Josh Bard is also still recovering from a torn Achilles tendon on August 7th. Bard recently signed a new contract worth $3.9m over 3 years.

(Jan 4-5, 2010): Nationals sign relief pitcher Trevor Hoffman and second baseman Placido Polanco, each to 2 year contracts. In 51 appearances with the Brewers in 2009, Hoffman carried a 2.25 ERA and had 27 saves in 35 opportunities. Polanco, who's played with Detroit for the past 4 and a half seasons, had a .296 average in 2009 starting in 89 games. Polanco, who's known for his defense, won a Gold Glove in 2007.

Looks like the front office has used this offseason to strengthen the bullpen. I'm looking forward to see who comes out with the closer job. I'm sure Hanrahan has the upper hand but he's got some competition now. Well, I gotta get back to practice.

DC Sports Twitter (June 1, 2010): with the 22nd pick in the draft, the Nationals select RF Scott Lough out of Cal State Fullerton. In two seasons with CSF he had 49 home runs in 111 games! He also has solid contact numbers as he batted .400 his freshman year and .356 his sophomore year. We'll see if the numbers translate to the Professional leagues as he starts off with the GCL Nationals Rookie League team.

Washington Nationals update: 50-53, 5th place, 6 games back
Stephen Strasburg blog: Well, two pitchers in the rotation are out. Cabrera should be back soon. My buddy Ross Detwiler has entered the rotation and might get his first start. He deserves it. He's been coming out of the bullpen with a 1.80 ERA! As for me, I'm still tied with 11 wins to lead A ball (forgot to mention that I have less starts than most pitchers in A this year). My ERA has dropped to 2.92 and I'm just .02 out of the top 10. August is here already... geez!

Stephen Strasburg blog (August 14, 2010): Well, I finally got the call! The Washington Nationals have made me the #5 starter in the rotation. Tyler Clippard has 5 more days til he returns. I'm not scheduled to pitch until the 19th. Not sure if he's going to kick me out of the rotation or what. Excitement is the only word I can think of!

Stephen Strasburg blog (Sept 1, 2010): I'm back up in the Majors for September. The Nats have a winning record but are a little bit farther out of contention than last year, 10 games behind in 5th place. The good news is we're only 4 games back from the wild card. I'll be working from the bullpen, again. I went 6-0 in 6 starts in August. By the way, my last 10 games in the minors I was 8-0 with a 1.39 ERA and my opponents hit .154. Let's Go Nats!

I guess a slow start in September (2-4) is the reason to give me a shot. We're now 68-69, 7 and a half games back from Los Angeles for the wild card and 12 back from Florida for the NL East. Stephen Strasburg blog (Sept 8, 2010): Well, two major league starts under my belt and both times the opposing pitcher throws 4 hitless innings. Jair Jurrjens was pitching like a monster until he gave up his first hit and a run in both the 5th and 6th innings. Too bad I had just given up 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th. The Braves had my number today and I was lucky enough to strike out 9 and control them for 6 out of 7 of my innings I pitched. I still ended up with my first major league loss.

DC Sports Twitter (Sept 16, 2010): Stephen Strasburg got his second start of the season today and the Nationals finally snapped a 10-game losing streak. Worried about his elbow, Strasburg only threw 89 pitches against the Astros in 6 innings, giving up 3 runs. Once again, the offense didn't show up until after Strasburg was pulled scoring on a 2-run blast by Dmitri Young and an RBI single by Zimmerman in the 7th and a rally in the 8th to take the lead for good. Strasburg had a slower fastball today topping out at 97 (3 mph under what he usually does). As a result, he only struck out two batters.

DC Sports Twitter (Sept 21, 2010): Another pitcher's duel from Stephen Strasburg who went up against the Phillies southpaw ace, Cole Hamels. Both pitchers went 7 innings without a run and only two hits each. Strasburg went 8 and gave up the go-ahead run when Langerhans (2-2 vs. Strasburg career), pinch-hit a single and made it around the bases to score the game's first run. The Nationals ended up scoring in the bottom of the 8th when Willie Harris did the same thing pinch-running for Dmitri Young. He was eventually brought in by a Cristian Guzman base hit. After two solid relief innings from Joel Hanrahan, the game went to the bottom of the tenth. With one out, Lastings Milledge doubled and advanced to third on a throwing error by Jayson Werth. With the infield in, catcher Lou Marson allowed a pitch to get by him and the Nationals would go on to win 2-1 on a 10th inning walk-off passed ball.

DC Sports Twitter (Sept 27, 2010): Well, no pitcher's duel today. The Braves going for the sweep in Washington. Stephen Strasburg (0-1, 3.00) going up against Javier Vazquez (16-8, 3.98). 1st inning opened up with a bang as the Braves tag 3 off Strasburg including a 2-run homer by Vladimir Guerrero, Strasburg's first homer allowed in the Majors. The Nationals quickly struck back, in the bottom of the first, with 4 runs including a 3-run homer from Adam Dunn. But the Braves weren't going out quietly. In the third inning they added 3 more runs including a 2-rbi triple by Brian McCann, his first of two triples on the day and the year. Scott Olsen would come in to relieve Strasburg in the top of the 4th as the Nationals fall to the Braves 10-7.

DC Sports Twitter (Nov 3, 2010): Nationals release Guzman, Flores, and Olsen. Dmitri Young retires. Cristian Guzman played 5 seasons in 6 years for the Nationals. He started off slowly but became a hitting machine in his last 3 seasons with the Nats. Flores, coming off a season-ending injury in June '09, wasn't able to get the ball rolling or the bat swinging in 2010. In 124 starts, he only had 49 RBIs. Scott Olsen came over in a November '08 trade with the Marlins and was considered the ace of the young rotation in 2009. After an extension, he went downhill this season, with a 2-point ERA drop. Dmitri Young had an all-star '07 season. After battling injuries from 2008 to 2010, Dmitri Young retired at age 37.

DC Sports Twitter (Nov 12, 2010): Nationals resign Cristian Guzman! After parting ways with Guzman over a week ago, both parties have come to a $26m/4yr agreement.
DC Sports Twitter (Nov 13, 2010): Nationals sign 30-year old relief pitcher, Pat Neshek, to a $7.6m/2-yr contract. After missing most of the 2008 and the entire 2009 season, Neshek pitched 72 innings while posting a 4.21 ERA with 77 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .226.

DC Sports Twitter (Feb 10, 2011): Nationals sign catcher Brayan Pena to a $2.5m/2yr contract. Pena, a contact-hitting catcher with decent speed, is the polar opposite of Jesus Flores (signed with Twins last week). He should be the opening day starter for the Nationals.

Kornheiser: At 22 years old, Stephen Strasburg will begin his rookie season in the Washington Nationals starting rotation. Should he be treated like a rookie or is it time for Mr. Strasburg to prove himself?
Wilbon: Well, Tony, from what I remember, in 2008, Stephen Strasburg was picked 1st overall by the Washington Nationals, marketing himself as the best pitching prospect of all-time. All the hype had him entering the rotation as soon as they signed him or at least the next season. A couple slow starts for Strasburg and he didn't even see the Majors until the 40-man call ups in September of each season. This is now his third professional season. It's time for him to step up to the plate... step up to the mound and prove his worth to this franchise.
Kornheiser: As we all remember, this Nats squad was close to making the playoffs the year they drafted him. They're not a bad team and they can only get better pitching-wise. But don't you think it's a little too much to ask this kid to go out and become the ace?
Wilbon: They're not asking Strasburg to be the ace. They just want a solid season out of him. He can't go out and give up 5 runs a start and consider the season to be a success.
Kornheiser: But he's 22!
Wilbon: But he's making more money than the rest of the team! He can talk the talk... But it all comes down to can he walk the walk?
Kornheiser: So what does he need to do to consider 2011 a success?
Wilbon: He needs to win at least 10 games, he needs to keep his ERA lower than last season's four and a half runs. He needs to strikeout 10+ batters in multiple games and if he can do this he will show he's worth every dollar the Nats paid him.
Kornheiser: What's the worst-case scenario? Does he go back to the minor leagues?
Wilbon: Strasburg's ERA rises and he has trouble winning. He's going to have to really screw up to get demoted to the minors again. And if he does, it might be lights out for Strasburg in Washington and I predict the Nats will cut their losses and try to trade him for as much as they can get.
Kornheiser: Bottom line... grow up Stephen Strasburg and grow up fast!

DC Sports Twitter (Apr 10, 2011): On a cold day in Philly, the Nationals defense bobbled the loss in their own hands. Starting in the third inning, with runners on first and second, a routine fly ball to Adam Dunn looked to be the first out of the inning but instead turned into a run and runners on second and third and still no outs. Utley would follow that up with a 2-rbi single before Strasburg finally got out of the jam. "It's not easy to win with a young pitcher when your defense is making mistakes instead of backing up his good pitching," said skipper Manny Acta, "As a pitcher, when your defense isn't behind you, you feel the need to strike everyone out and that's when things can go very wrong." And it didn't stop there. In the sixth inning, with two outs, after a two-out double by Raul Ibanez, another routine flyball to center field was dropped by Lastings Milledge. Ibanez would score and Ramon Vazquez would go to second. Two more singles, a run, and a walk would push Strasburg out of the game after 5.2 innings. The Phillies would go on to win 6-2.

An even better game pitched by Yovanni Gallardo, pitching 8 innings of shutout baseball. A solo home run in the top of the fourth by Mat Gamel, would be the only run given up by both starters. Stephen Strasburg struck out The Brewers would tag 5 more off the Nat's bullpen and the Nationals rallied in the bottom of the ninth to score 3 runs. Too little, too late. Brewers win 6-3. Stephen Strasburg has now given up two earned runs in two starts and received two losses. Rare.

A: Looking at a short span of games, there's a good chance the W-L stat won't determine the better pitcher. But through the span of a career, it is a very significant stat.

DC Sports Twitter (Apr 23, 2011): Stephen Strasburg would start out rocky giving up 3 earned runs in the first two innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. He would shake it off and go another 3 innings scoreless. Placido Polanco would get Strasburg off the hook in the top of the fifth with a 3-run homer. After five innings, Strasburg would be pulled by Acta throwing only 80 pitches. "My job isn't to determine the pitcher's worth from salary. I determine his worth from past experience. You don't always have to pitch 100 pitches," explained manager Manny Acta, "Strasburg showed what kind of pitcher he was today. After his rough start, he came out and pitched well for three innings. He should build strength and confidence off of that." The Cardinals went on to post 3 runs off of the Nat's bullpen and win the game 6-3.

DC Sports Twitter (Apr 27, 2011): In the tenth start of his career, Stephen Strasburg walked away with a win. In the second and third innings, he was blessed with run support, including a 2-run homer by Adam Dunn. It almost came crashing down in the top of the seventh. Nationals lead 5-1 and Strasburg had worked himself into a jam. Bases loaded and one out. Acta came out to the mound and Strasburg asked him to finish the inning. He struck out the pinch-hitter for the second out and got Jimmy Rollins to ground to shortstop for the-- E6. Bases still loaded and the Phillies are now down 5-2. Shane Victorino singles into right field allowing the tying run to get to third base. Strasburg would get Utley to ground to first to end the inning. The Nationals would add an insurance run in the bottom of the 7th and cruise to victory, 6-4.

Ray Knight post game interview w/ Stephen Strasburg:
Ray: Nice game today Stephen. How you feeling about the performance?
Stephen: I think I pitched the ball well. They were able to get some hits off of me but, for the most part, I controlled them when I wanted to.
Ray: This was your tenth start at this level. Are you getting used to major league baseball?
Stephen: I definitely feel more confident with my pitches. I know I've still got room to improve on but I've come along way so far.
Ray: That you have. You had 9 strikeouts today against the Phillies. What'd you do differently to prepare yourself mentally and physically for this team?
Stephen: Well, you know, this was my third start against the Phillies and they're getting to know me but I'm also getting to know them. I look at game film beforehand and figure out how I'm going to pitch each batter.

DC Sports Twitter (May 2, 2011): Nationals got off to a good start getting Stephen Strasburg two runs with a two-out rbi double by Adam Dunn in the first and a two-out rbi triple from Dunn in the third. Stephen Strasburg showed a flash of his own greatness by striking out the first 7 batters of the game right up until the eight hitter, backup catcher, Mike Rabelo singled for the first hit of the game and eventually scored the Marlins first run. After striking out 10 batters, Strasburg would leave the game after the 5th inning with five earned runs charged to his account, including Hanley Ramirez's ninth homer of the season. He would get his, NL-leading, tenth home run a couple innings later off of Pat Neshek. The Marlins would go on to win 6-2. Strasburg will get another chance against the Marlins, next week in Nationals Park.

Backed up by a 3-run homer by catcher Brayan Pena and a solo blast by the slumping Elijah Dukes, the Nationals would take a 5-0 lead. In the top of the eighth, Strasburg would get pulled after giving up a pinch-hit home run to John Baker. The Nationals would grab three more in the bottom of the eighth including a 2-run shot by Milledge. The Nats would go on to win this one 8-2! With the worst record in the NL, they're 8 games back from Atlanta in the NL East.

DC Sports Twitter (May 12, 2011): Both starters looked good. Despite working up 70 pitches after 3 innings, Strasburg was able to fight it out for 7 innings with Javier Vazquez. You can't help but blame this game on the bullpen. Taylor Buchholz, the Nationals only reliever with an ERA under 3.00 (before the game), came in and gave up 3 runs, which turned out to be the margin of victory for the Braves. "It's hard to decide who's going to pitch when you don't have a go-to guy in the bullpen," explained Manny Acta, "It's just tough when [Joel Hanrahan] has an ERA around 13.00."

Setup man, Taylor Buchholz came in the 8th and gave up a run but got out of a jam with a double play. Despite blowing 4 out of 8 of his save opportunities, Joel Hanrahan got his chance to close out the ball game in the bottom of the 9th. He did away with all three batters in blue to collect his 5th save on the year, as the Nationals split the 4-game series in LA with the best team in the NL West.

DC Sports Twitter (June 1, 2011): With the 13th pick in the draft, the Nationals select, 21-year old, SS Chris Verhulst (70/90). Selected out of Florida State, Verhulst hit .458 with an OPS of 1.404 in his last season with the Seminoles. In his two-year collegiate career he had 34 home runs in 100 games. He has the ability to be a star on the field and at the plate.

DC Sports Twitter (June 13, 2011): The Nationals have started June red hot. Winning 9 of 11 and currently on a 7-game win streak. They've boosted their record to 27-34 but are still in last place in the NL East, 11 games back. Most of their success has come from Adam Dunn's 5 home runs and their consistent pitching. Speaking of pitching, Stephen Strasburg is expected to return next week and should start in an interleague matchup against either the Blue Jays or the Orioles.

DC Sports Twitter (June 19, 2011): What a game! Besides Stephen Strasburg getting lit up by the Orioles. Allowing two solo home runs and 6 earned runs in five innings. The Nats helped out with 2 runs of support in the first two innings but were basically shut down in the runs department by O's starter, Rich Hill. He would leave the game after 7 innings. A big mistake. In the bottom of the eighth, the Nationals put together an 8-run inning. Starting with the hot bat of Ryan Zimmerman's single and ending with a Ryan Zimmerman Grand Slam into the Red Porch seats of Nationals Park! (see below for inning recap) The Nats would go on to win this offensive shootout 10-6!

DC Sports Twitter (June 24, 2011): Strasburg strikes out 18 in 10 innings of work! Unfortunately, he gave up the 2-out winning double, but it is clear that Strasburg can be a dominant force. "Even though we lost the game today, it was one of the biggest high points of the season for me," said Manny Acta, "It showed the team that we have a very special pitcher in our midst and someday soon he's going to show the league how dominant he can be." And with a little bit of run support, Strasburg would have gotten the win. But instead the only run for the Nats came on a Willie Harris triple and eventual tag up to tie the game in the 8th. The Cardinals go on to win in 10 innings, 2-1.

DC Sports Twitter (June 29, 2011): Nationals call it close against the Brew crew but come up short in the ninth inning. Rookie pitcher, Stephen Strasburg, gave up 5 runs in 5 innings including back to back home runs by Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. "You sometimes forget he's a rookie when he's throwing up 10 strikeouts a game," said National's ace, John Lannan, "He'll eventually learn where to place and control his pitches and then the other team will find it harder to rally on scattered hits." His 8 strikeouts on the game brings his yearly total to 98, 10th in the NL despite missing a month with a knee injury. Strasburg is looking at two more starts before the all-star break.

DC Sports Twitter (July 5, 2011): The Nationals dropped a 5-game losing streak by beating the Marlins 6-5 in extra innings. The Nats boasted a 3-0 lead before Strasburg left the game with two outs in the 5th inning. Hanrahan would end up blowing the game in the bottom of the 9th, giving up a 2-out rbi double to Jon Crede. The Nats would score two including a go-ahead rbi double by Ryan Zimmerman. They'd call it close again in the bottom of the tenth when Pat Neshek would force a double play and strikeout Cameron Maybin with the tying run on third to end the game. The Nationals have a 6-game home stand against the Rockies and Astros before the all-star break.

DC Sports Twitter (July 11, 2011): Strasburg sends 10 down on strikes to help the Nationals beat the Astros in Nationals Park. After giving up a run in the top of the 3rd, the Nationals came back and took four of their own in the bottom of that same inning which included a 2-run shot by Lastings Milledge. Strasburg would leave the game after 7 solid innings dropping his ERA down to 3.33 at the all-star break. "It seemed like a good game to finish the first half on," said Stephen Strasburg, "I think I can focus on this win and hopefully it will carry over to the second half." The Nationals would coast to victory through their bullpen in the last two innings winning it 6-3.

The bats rewarded him with a 5-0 lead, including an rbi-single by Strasburg, before he would give up two runs in the sixth, his last inning on the mound. The Nationals would add another 3 runs and the bullpen would later give them right back but the Nats would hold on for the win, 8-5!

DC Sports Twitter (July 22, 2011): Mets pitcher, John Maine (8-3), shuts down Nationals. The first of four hits by the Nationals didn't come until the 6th inning. By then, Strasburg had been pulled and it wasn't good enough to rally back from a 3-0 deficit. The Mets were having trouble themselves, but managed to get 3 runs off of mistakes made by the Nationals defense forcing Strasburg from the game during the 5th inning. The Mets end up with the win, 4-1.

DC Sports Twitter (July 27, 2011): Stephen Strasburg got the matchup of his career going against 2-time Cy Young winner, Tim Lincecum. The game started out slow for Strasburg, giving up a leadoff walk and an rbi double to Pablo Sandoval, as the Giants jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Strasburg would allow two more base runners on hits in the third and that would be it for him. Lincecum shut down the Nationals early until the bottom of the fifth, after a sacrifice bunt from Strasburg, Milledge would single in Polanco for the tying run. Then in the sixth, Willie Harris would double in Ryan Zimmerman for the lead. The Nats would tag an insurance run in the 7th after another sac bunt from Strasburg to give them a comfortable 3-1 lead. Stephen Strasburg would go the distance retiring the last 18 batters in order, five of them on strikeouts. Stephen Strasburg gets his second complete game of the season and his career and the Nationals would beat the Giants 3-1! The Nationals are now within 8 and a half of first place after the Braves have lost 9 of 10. They are also 8 games back of the Mets for the NL wild card.
