I made a suggestion to Mizerak for this app, but I figured I'd do it myself instead. I'm not much of a programmer, but this was a pretty easy App to make. This is a very raw version, but as I want to get feedback first about what kind of logic to use, I didn't make it more complex at this moment. So, this is what this is about:
There are a lot of good "house rules" for free agency/trades etc, and the Negotiator App has been great for making free agent signings much more difficult. But one thing that still bugs me about all the house rules is the arbitrary restrictions you have in making signings/making trades. There is no real baseball equivalent of only being allowed to sign 1 free agent after finishing 2nd in the division, or only being allowed to do one trade in an offseason etc. The fun part about GM'ing should be the number-crunching, figuring out whether you can afford to pay that backup shortstop the 1,7M/year he's after, or the agony you get when you realise that the $12M deal you made for an aging starter who's on the DL all the time is ruining all your chances of contending because you have no room for any signings. That part is completely absent in BM currently, but I hope this app will help once it's fully done.
I don't know why I can't upload the image, but in the meantime, here is a link to a screenshot: http://i.imagehost.org/0827/payrollapp.jpg
Here is a short tutorial:
Use the app after the season has ended, before going into free agency.
Current Year: Enter the year your currently in
Number of teams: Enter the amount of teams that are in your league
Hit the Refresh-button after entering this data.
Team Finances:
Payroll: Enter how your current payroll compares to other teams in the league. 1 is for highest, 5 is for 5th highest etc.
Profit: Check it if you made a profit the current year, leave it un-checked if you didn't
Team Performance:
There are four choices for performance, that can be altered by pressing the scroll-thingy's. The alternatives are: "Not in contention", "In contention, missed playoffs", "Lost in Playoffs" and "Won Championship". It is up to you what you consider contending and non-contending.
After entering this data, press "Get Budget". You will now get your payroll data for the next two seasons. The payroll's are presented in percentage-form, so you have to use a calculator to make the correct adjustments conserning your own payroll.
If you're currently in 2014, and the App tells you you should adjust your payroll for 2015 with -17%, then you should reach that level by April 1st, 2015. The same goes for the 2016 payroll. Note that the 2nd year is applicable only if your profit-situation stays unchanged, like it says in the "Remember"-box in the app.
So, if this is an app you would be interested in, I would love to hear suggestions about what logic to use. I'd also be interested in knowing where you usually rank in terms of payroll, and whether you find it easy to make a profit with a top5 payroll in a "regular"-sized market. Currently the app makes quite a big deal about whether you're makign a profit or not.
So, give me suggestions......
