Building something Special 84 Mets
New owner Fred Wilpon and manger Davy Johnson were talking in the Met's main office after the decision to fire their gm was released to public. The Mets felt they had talent to be a very good team. Lead by young players Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry the Mets have a strong future. They discussed what kind of GM they wanted for their team. They need a GM who could get good vets to go with their young guys. Another skill they wanted was the ability to find good picks since they expected to have high picks for the next few years. They started to read over the men who were interested in the job.

Re: Building something Special 84 Mets
Fred Wilpon was setting in his office on a quiet october day listening to the O's and Phill game 5. Then Garry Maddox lined out to Cal Ripken JR at short and Fred could picture the celebrating going on. After that he turned off the game. He wanted to see what that feeling was like when his team won the World Series. He knew that his choice for the GM of the team would have a huge effect on this. Then his secretary, Erik Smith walked in the room.
"Hello Erik." "Hello Fred, how are you today?" "I'm good Erik. What do you need?" "You got a letter Fred." "Who is it from Erik?" "It is from a x-met great." " Who is it from Erik." " It is from.....

Re: Building something Special 84 Mets
"Bud Harrelson." Said Erik Smith.
Fred Wilpon felt chills running up his shoulder. He was really excited. He hoped Bud was asking for the GM job because he seemed like the perfect guy. The fans love him and I feel he is a great baseball guy as well who can help turn us around. "Can I have the letter Erik?" "Yes, here you go Fred." "Thank you Erik." Fred anxiously opened the letter. He was eager to read what it said. Dear Fred, I know the Mets are looking for a new GM and I feel I'm the man for the job. I love baseball and I know the fans love me from my playing days. This team has some great young talent and has the potential to get back to the WS. I wouldn't ask for this job without a plan and I have got one. I am going to build a system focused on our pitching. In order to do this I have contacted Sandy Koufax and he agreed to be my pitching coach if I got the job. He loves the young pitchers we have. The kid he is most impressed with is Doc Gooden. He feels we can build a great young staff around Gooden. He will also try and build a good offense. It won't be full of stars but will have good bats and be a good complement to our pitching. Our offense will be around Strawberry. So you can get a fan fav GM and one of the best pitchers ever has your pitching coach and we can build around Straw and Doc. I feel this will get New York rocking again and we can do some great things. Cleary both my side and your side benefit from this. Please let me know when we can arrange a press conference. From, Bud Harrelson Fred has the biggest smile you will ever see across his face. He wrote back as fast as he could saying yes and asking if the press conference could be next week.

Re: Building something Special 84 Mets
Today was the big press conference. Fred Wilpon was going to reveal the new gm of the New York Mets. Fred started out the talking.
"Ladies and gentlemen I am here to announce the new gm of the New York Mets. However there is more than just that. Today is a day that can possibly change the state of the franchise for a long long time. Ladies and gentlemen your new gm, walking in though the door on my right is Bud Harrelson." The crowd gave him a standing ovation. Then Fred continued. “We feel Bud can be the guy to help us turn around the team. He loves and knows the game of baseball and is beloved by Mets fan. I felt that there was no doubt he was the right choice for the GM. Now I believe you have an announcement. “Yes I do Fred. Playing in New York were the best days of my life. I played in 2 WS's here as a player and now want to lead them to more as a GM. In order to do this I will build around our pitching. With me I brought our new pitching coach. He is the perfect guy to teach our young pitchers and to guide us in the right direction. Ladies and gentlemen, walking in on the door to my right is our new pitching coach, an all time great, Sandy Koufax." The crowd roared with excitement with this announcement. Then Fred talked again. “I couldn't be happier with the 2 guys we hired. I feel they were no doubt the best men for the job. I feel we can and will make it back to the WS. Let's go Mets!!! We will not be taking questions at this time."

Re: Building something Special 84 Mets
Bud Harrelson sat in his office on his first full day as GM looking over his team among other things. The first thing he noticed that the team didn't have a clear cut leader. They had vets like rusty stab but not really a leader. He decided that that would be the first need we would try to fill. He started looking over his other team rosters when he heard a knock.
"Hello, who's there?" "I'm Erik Smith. I'm Fred's assistant. I just wanted to ask if you needed anything." "I'm fine Mr. Smith, can you just open the window over there." "Of course sir." Then after Erik opened the window a breeze blew into the room and blew a couple of papers off his desk. The paper left on top was the Whitesox's team. The first player on the list was Carlton Fisk. "Anything else you need Bud?" “No thank you Erik." After Erik left, Bud looked at the Whitesox team some more and got an offer together and then he got on the phone and called the Whitesox GM. "Hello, who is this?" "This is Bud Harrelson, the new Mets GM." "Hello bud how may I help you." "Well, I have a trade offer for you." "I'm listening." “I’m offering Mookie, Stearns, and 300 k for Fisk and Rudy Law." " That's a solid offer Bud as we are trying to get Fisk's 1 mil off the payroll, however I want a little more value out of this. "I'll up the cash to 500k and give you OF Danny Heap." "Give me a minute to look over Heap." "OK." A few minutes later the Whitesox Gm answered. "Bud you have a deal!" "Thank you sir it's been a pleasure. "Thank you Bud and good luck." The deal: Mets trade: OF Danny Heap, OF Mookie Wilson, C John Stearns. Whitesox trade:C Carlton Fisk, OF Rudy law We get our leader and a leadoff hitter back. They shave 1 mil off the payroll get a leadoff guy a solid hitter and great defense catcher and a young OF. ![]()

Re: Building something Special 84 Mets
They got a carton of fisks?
You should've traded for Carlton Fisk instead.

Re: Building something Special 84 Mets
New York Times
Jim Palmer, Steve Finley Mets, as Bud makes 2nd deal Bud Harrelson completed his 2nd deal as GM of the Mets. He continues to bring in Veteran leader ship as he gets 38 year old starter and future HOF Jim Palmer. He also got Steve Finley an 18 year old CF. Palmer will help teach the young pitchers, provide leadership and hopefully pitch some good games. Finley projects to be a 5 tool player in CF. He projects to be the CF of the future for the Mets. The Mets gave up 27 year old 3rd baseman Hubie Brooks, starter pitching Craig Swan and 2 prospects, Randy Milligan and Rick Aguilera. This helps the Mets now and for the future. It is a good deal for both sides as the O's get a 3rd baseman, a younger sp and 2 nice prospects. ![]() ![]()

Re: Building something Special 84 Mets
Fred Wilpon called Bud and Davy into his office so he could see the lineup and rotation they put together. Fred started the talking.
"Hello guys. A new season is here and I know we will be much improved. Bud, I am very happy with the moves you have made and you have improved the team now and for the future. Now it's your time to turn our talent into success Davy." "Thank you Fred. And thanks you bud for giving me the talent you have given me. I am really happy to have this job and I will do the best I can to make us winners. Now Bud can you show him the lineup." "Yes I can. Here it is Fred; if you have any problems tell me." "That looks good guys. However just watch Straw. If he slumps early and for a while move him down. Now the pitching please." "I got it again Davy. Ok before I show you we have decided to pithc Doc on opening day. We feel this can get our season off to a rocking start by having people watch his MLB debut day." "That sounds great guys. Now the rest." "Here it is: "Davy, Bud that works great, meeting dismissed.

Keith Hernandez hit 419 with 1 homer[ Our only homer of the series.] and 6 RBIS. The only bad part was that Straw didn't get any hits but he hit some balls hard. Mog: I gonna post it at the end of every month but since I haven't yet here it is: New York Mets (1984).mog
