Spartans edge Yankees in extra innings
Sacramento leads 1-0

Tonight in Game 1, both teams showcased the best pitching they had. Taking the mound for Sacramento was homegrown ace Jeff Karstens while the Yankees gave the nod to Juan Mateo. Both pitchers showed why they are the best on their respective teams. The Spartans got the best of Mateo and manged to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th, putting them up 3 to 1. In the top of the 8th, Sacramento made a surprise move by sending out minor league player Joba Chamberlain. For the inning he gave up one hit and struck out one. In the next inning of play though, he gave up two runs to tie the ball game. Manager Will Clark allowed Chamberlain to face one batter in the top of the 10th but after walking him, Clark brought in Neal Musser to pitch.

Lucky for the Spartans, In the bottom of the 10th, Pablo Sandoval doubled up center and with Adam Jones doubling down the left field line, Pablo made it home to win the game 4 to 3.

Spartans AGAIN edge Yankees

Where will it end for the Spartans?

So far this post season, the Spartans have managed to win 9 straight games! Tonight, just like last night, was showcasing the best of what both teams had. Both bats were swinging freely tonight as the score was tied at the top of the 9th, 7 to 7. Just as a test, manager Will Clark decided to start Scott Kazmar in place of A-Rod. This move surprised Spartans fans as he has been hitting quite well lately as Kazmar has only played in a total of 60 regular season games over the course of 2 years. But during today's game, nobody really noticed A-Rod missing.

What can be called the great 1-2 punch to the Yankees is the combination of Pablo Sandoval and Adam Jones.

Like Game 1, Pablo doubled down center field bringing up Adam Jones, to double down right field to drive Pablo in for the winning run. But this time, keeping it within the 9 innings of play.

"I couldn't be prouder of these two right now." Says hitting coat Matt Williams. "For the second time these two came up in the clutch to win us the game, extending that winning streak to 9."

Tonight both teams will head back to New York where they will play Game 3 on October 28th at 5:30 P.M. PST.

Sacramento shuts out New York
Needs one more to win the Series

With Jordan Tata only allowing 3 hits during the entire game, the Spartans almost had this game gift wrapped for them. Sacramento managed to get 12 hits with only three runs but the way this game was going, they would have won with A-Rod's home run alone.

"We just went out there, did our thing, and we shut out the Yankees in their own ball park!" Says starting pitcher Jordan Tata and winner of today's game. "I didn't think I'd be able to shut the Yankees out. I've been getting a hard time from the pitching staff that I didn't throw a no hitter today."

Tomorrow could be the Yankees last chance to have put up any sort of fight in this series but the Spartans have all the momentum right now with their playoff streak at 10 right now. If New York came back and won the world series from the Spartans, it would be the greatest come back in MLB history.

New York stops Sacramento dead in it's tracks
Score 7-2

It seems that the Yankees did have a little something extra that was able to stop the Spartans from taking the series in a sweep. If you could award a player of the game, it would go to Yankees Pitcher Patrick Misch. For the first three innings, it was three up and three down, basically holding back the Spartans strongest point: Their bats. During this time, the Yankees took advantage of a rare Jeff Karstens off day, as they scored 7 runs within the first 4 innings.

"We just played shitty ball today." Says manager Will Clark. "We'll come back tomorrow though and show why we are the 2008 defending World Champions."

Sacramento Spartans 2009 WORLD CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL!
Edge out Yankees 3 to 2

In a great outing by both teams today, Sacramento proved once again why they are the best team in baseball. For the second time in two years, the Spartans beat out the Yankees 4 games to 1, but this time in New York.

As Brian Wolfe, the Spartans closer, came to the mound in the bottom of the 9th with the score 3 to 2, the crowd began to boo extremely loudly, almost to the point where Wolfe had to step off the mound for a moment. After the first out, security guards at the field came out and lined the walls in fear of the fans either throwing things onto the field or them charging the field after the final outs. The Yankees didn't need much to win though. Maybe a couple of doubles, a home run to tie it, or just some luck. The game wasn't out of reach for them but the fans knew that their hopes and dreams would be shattered in a matter of two outs.

After Jeter hitting one to second base, me managed to get on but the runner on first was forced out. During one of Wolfe's pitches, Jeter stole second and the crowd exploded. Wolfe looked at Jeter after he stole and nearly stared a hole into him. Jeter didn't pay attention though, he just kept fixing his gloves. Finally, the next pitch, Shane Victorino grounded out to short, and the Spartans became the 2009 World Champions of Baseball for the second time!

Bud Selig steps down as Baseball Commissioner!

Today in a stunning announcement, Bud Selig that he will step down as Major League Baseball commissioner effective immediately. People were shocked at the the press conference today where he announced this.

"I just feel that I've done all I can for Major League Baseball. I have no plans to help the MLB find another commissioner." Bud Selig did not field anymore questions after that.

We'll keep you updated on this situation @ESPN.com

Re: THIS. IS. SPARTA! Pt. II

December 5th, 2009
Las Vegas, NV
Winter Meetings

"Here we are Mr. Emigh." The cab driver said as we pulled up to the MGM Grand Hotel. Even though I've been in Vegas before, I've never been to THIS hotel. It was a lot bigger then I had expected. Just as I got out, I handed the driver some money, then went to the trunk to pull out my briefcase and my one duffel bag. I find it quite odd that even though I own a two time World Series winning team I still travel with a duffel bag instead of something expensive like Gucci or whatever it's called. I set my stuff down in front of the front counter.

"Dennis M. Emigh, Sacramento Spartans." I tell the lady. After a few minutes of pounding away on the keyboard, she finally looks up, smiling, and hands me my key card.

"Have a great stay here at MGM Grand." I give her a smile and nod as I head for the elevators. The meetings don't start for another few hours, so I want to go up to my room and lay down for a little bit. I have a feeling that the meetings will be crazy this time around.

-----

I was woke up by the alarm clock on my cell phone. I still had an hour to go but I wanted to make sure I had enough time to look my best. Both I and the Yankees owner would be sitting at the heads of the table. An old tradition that MLB carries is that if there is no commissioner then the league presidents would take over as moderators of the meetings. Well, the problem with that was they rarely had to exercise this tradition and since the presidents were dissolved back in 2002, we just had to go with the two teams that made it to the World Series. As Spiderman's uncle always said, "With great power comes great responsibility" which to me, that translated into "You won, now you get to be the boss so don't **** it up."

After finally getting myself ready (I feel like a girl for taking so long!), I make the long and nervous ride down the elevator, thankfully alone. The moment I feel the elevator make it to ground level, my stomach jumped into my throat. It was very nerve racking that one of the youngest owners in the league right now will be the boss of everyone else who, you would think, would have more say over a matter then I would. With 15 minutes to spare, I walk into the conference room to find all of the owners already there, drinking and mingling. As I greet people and shake hands, I make my way to the head of the table where it says "NL President". I felt this to be a great honor. I set my briefcase down on the chair and I head over to a bar where a bartender awaits his orders.

"Do you have any sodas?" I ask. I'm not much of a drinker.

"Only Mt. Dew." He says with a smile on his face. He'll get a tip just for that.

"Really?"

"Yea. Before everyone got here we were able to get personal preferences from each owner of what sort of drinks they like. YOU, on the other hand, don't like to drink. So we called your office in Sacramento and a nice lady informed us that you like Mt. Dew Code Red in a glass with 4 ice cubes." As he told me this, he poured my 'drink' into a glass, just the way I like it. He slid it over to me.

"Oh, you're good." I throw a twenty into his tip jar. "Keep up the good work." I raise my glass to him and he replies with a nod. Just as I take my seat at my part of the table, George Steinbrenner takes his seat in the AL Presidents seat at the opposite end of the table. He gives me a nod as I stand up with the gavel in hand. I'm guessing that in this meeting, I have more power because I won the world series. Well, that's fine by me. I knock the gavel down on a wooden coaster.

"Everyone have a seat!" I yell as people start making their way to their seats. I lay a paper of the meetings over view on the table in front of me to get started. Something caught my eye about who I saw sitting with the AL West part of the table, but I try to ignore it.

"First off, I would like to introduce two new owners who will be joining us for this meeting and for meetings in the coming years. The owner of the Mexico City Red Devils, Alex Perez." Alex stands up in the NL Central section, fixes his coat and gives everyone a wave.

"It's an honor to be here with you fine gentlemen. I hope our 2010 season is a great one." He sits down as everyone gives him a golf clap.

"Now the owner of the Tokyo Giants...." I pause for a moment. I couldn't believe I was saying this. "Dylan Peters." As he stands up, he looks over at me fixing his coat, then looks away to wave at everyone.

"I think this is a big step for Major League Baseball as a whole to be introducing two new countries with teams." He sits down as everyone gives him another golf clap.

"First up on our list. The vote to allow the Milwaukee Brewers to move back to the AL Central to make room for the Mexico City Red Devils. All in favor, aye. All against, nay. All in favor?"

"Aye!" 22 ayes.

"Against?"

"Nay!" 9 nays. I smack the gavel on the coaster.

"Milwaukee Brewers League Change has passed and will be effective on January 1st, 2010." There is little mur murs of talk among a few of the owners. "Next up. Approval of the divisions current as of January 1st."

"In favor?"

"Aye!" 30 ayes.

"NAY!" One Nay, the San Fransisco Giants.

"Bill, state your case." He stands up.

"I don't like the fact that Major League Baseball will have TWO Giants teams. People will get confused and we'll lose part of our fan base."

"Bill, people aren't that dumb!" Says A's owner Lewis Wolff. "I think they will get the point that the Tokyo Giants are from Japan and the San Francisco Giants are from California. The only part that would be confusing is if you heard on the radio that the Giants won."

"I don't like it. It's unfair to our franchise." Bill says. He's almost sounding like a little kid. I rub my eyes a bit.

"What do you suggest?" I ask.

"Change the name and colors."

"I don't mind changing the colors, but I'm not changing the name." Dylan piped in. "The Tokyo Giants are really big in Japan and messing with the name would kill the fan base. Changing the colors is hard enough, but I can still do it. Take it or leave it." Dylan wasn't messing around today. He knew this was coming up. Bill sat back down and took a big sip of his drink.

"Fine..." He finally mumbles out.

"Good, that's settled. Dylan, the changes must be completed no later then February first." I tell him, trying to stay as professional as I can. He nods towards me as I look back down at the paper. "The next vote will approve the Rockies moving back to the NL West and the Astros moving back to the NL Central. In favor?"

"Aye!" 16 approved.

"Against?" It was silent. No AL team voted.

"The approval of the Rockies/Astros move has passed 16 to 0." I hit the gavel. "Now, are there any personal matters that need to be brought up today before our final vote?" I ask, looking around the room. "Excluding San Francisco." I joke which gets a few laughs and a snort from Bill. I wait a moment as the owners look around at each other.

"Ok, here we go. As you may have already guessed, the MLB is without a commissioner after Bud stepped down last month." John Henry, owner of the Red Sox, raises his hand. I point towards him and he stands up.

"I think before we elect a new commissioner, I would like to suggest that we reinstate League Presidents so we can deal with our own affairs as we wish." I nodded towards him and looked around. "I think everyone here agrees." I say as Frank McCourt stands up.

"Presidents could be determined by either election every few years or by who makes it to the World Series."

"Every few years to keep it fresh." Says Tom Hicks, Rangers owner.

"All in favor?"

"AYE!" Everyone agrees. I pound the gavel.

"This measure will go into effect January 1st, 2010. Duties of presidents will remain unofficial until duties are drafted and approved during the Summer Meetings." I sit back down.

"I vote that Dennis Emigh becomes the temporary Commissioner of baseball until we can find a suitable replacement." Of all of the owners to say such a thing, Dylan Peters was the one to say it. I was shocked, and I didn't know how to react. I looked around the table as everyone stared at me. I've never been in such a spot before.

"All in favor?" I squeaked out.

"AYE!" Everyone but a few voted yes.

"Then...." I couldn't even get a hold of the gavel correctly. "This...measure will become effective January 1st, 2010." I sat for a moment, trying to catch my breathe. I wasn't ready for this. "This meeting is adjured."

Re: THIS. IS. SPARTA! Pt. II

January 15th, 2010
Sacramento, CA
Mt. Dew Park

"I am sorry but that is the ruling." Said a man on the other end of the phone. "These players are contracted to Nippon Professional Baseball, so therefore all players will be banned from playing with the Tokyo Giants this year."

"Listen, I don't know why this all happened, but it did and now I'm in charge of it. The MLB as a whole tried to help you all out by sending some of our players over there to create a replacement team until this situation blew over. So you thank us by raiding the Giants roster and leave behind a few KIDS on the team? As commissioner I have decided to keep the American team over there and put together more of a permanent team so YOU guys can have a balanced season, minus the Giants. I am trying to help you!" I was getting frustrated with this.

"Their contract states that they signed with the Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball, not the Giants of the MLB."

"Yea, I get that already but our contracts with our guys over there say the same thing and I'm not pulling them out. This just isn't fair to anyone, not even the players who play for the Giants." I pause for a moment, trying to think of something to say. "Whatever happened with the Giants coming to the MLB was between you and Bud Selig. Taking over his spot, I am trying to make things right, but it's hard to do that with the Giants under new ownership, all the money Bud pumped into marketing for both of these teams to get over with a fan base, and you guys not being able to work with us."

"What has happened is between Nippon Professional Baseball and Major League Baseball, not just a few people. We look at the MLB as a whole, not represented by one person. As of this phone call our actions still stand. Any contracted player on the Giants will not be participating in the 2010 MLB Season."

"Fine. Consider yourself without a team." I slam the phone down and throw my stapler across the room. The NPB has ****ed us over hard. I wasn't planning on having a two team expansion draft. I was going to try and make everyone happy by having the Tokyo Giants use their existing roster but also able to use our free agent and farm system, while the Red Devils would be building from the ground up. This would surely upset a lot of owners, but none more upset then when I give Dylan the news. From the last I heard, he was over in Japan getting ready for the 2010 season. After I calm down a bit I decide to give him a call.

"Hello?" He answers on the second ring.

"Dylan? Hey, it's Dennis. How are ya?" We still haven't been able to hold a one on one conversation ever since I fired him.

"Good. What's up?"

"Well...I have some horribly bad news for you and your team." This was going to be hard to tell him.

"What? What's wrong?" Sounding worried.

"The NPB won't allow the Giants players to play in the MLB. They really ****ed us over on this deal." There was silence on the other end of the phone. I sat nervously, waiting for Dylan to say something.

"Hold on." I could hear him setting the phone down and getting up from whatever chair he was in. "Gai-San! GET OVER HERE!" I could hear him yelling for someone. He was most likely sticking his head out of his office. "Get on the phone with NPB and find out what the **** is going on! I was just told that our players can't play in the MLB. Hurry, go!" I heard him walking back to the phone, almost stomping.

"Is there anything I can do to help?" I ask.

"Yea. Don't blast the NPB or anything quite yet. Keep what you know to yourself until we try and work our magic over here." I hear him sifting through some papers.

"Alright. Don't work yourself too hard. Talk to ya later..." I calmed down a bit after hearing Dylan blow up.

"You too. See ya sometime during the season." We both hung up. I sat back in my chair, thinking of what I should do next.

If I announce that both teams will be participating in the draft, then people will know what's up. But if I don't tell them, then it may screw up the draft, and I'm already cutting it close by having it in Mid February. I start to rub my forehead. This was gonna be tough.

"What to do, what to do..."

Re: THIS. IS. SPARTA! Pt. II

January 30th, 2010

"Any luck?" I ask Dylan over the phone. While it was mid day for them, it was midnight in Sacramento.

"I've tried everything except for organizing a protest or threatening them with something. Nothing works and they are standing firm."

"Well, you know what you're gonna have to do now, right?"

"Yep. I need to enter the team into the draft." He says, sounding extremely disappointed.

"I'll send out a mass email tonight letting them know about the draft that's gonna take place in two weeks. Do you think the fans will respond well to it over there?" I ask.

"They're gonna have to, or else I'm ****ed. What really sucks about this is that the Giants were the top team over here for years and that's going to put even more pressure on me to build a winning team." He was already stressing over it.

"I know you can do it. You did well for my team so I don't see why you couldn't do the same for yours."

"Well, I hate to cut you lose Dennis but I gotta get going. I need to start preparing for the draft now."

"Ok Dylan. You take care of yourself buddy." I tell him as I start to yawn.

"You too. Talk to ya later." We both hang up and I sit in my dark office for a moment. I wake my computer up and pull up my email account.

"To: All MLB Owners and GM's
From: Temporary Commissioner Dennis Emigh

Subject: Expansion Draft

As you may have already guessed by now, the Expansion draft for the Mexico City Red Devils will be taking place on February 10th, 2010 as the Tokyo Giants would be bringing in their own team. Due to interferences and contract disputes outside of Major League Baseball, the Giants will NOT have their own team to compete with. So by the order of the Commissioner of Baseball, I hereby enter the Tokyo Giants into the 2010 Expansion draft. Same rules apply as 1997's draft.

See you at Spring Training!

-Dennis M. Emigh"

Re: THIS. IS. SPARTA! Pt. II

February 11th, 2010
Sacramento, CA
Mt. Dew Park

All morning, I've been getting constant calls from the Cubs, Yankees, Toronto, and surprisingly enough, a few angry fans. The phone calls have all been the same. 'Why were our rosters raided?' 'How come other teams didn't give up more players?' 'Cry cry cry we were robbed!' What they didn't understand is that when you start stock piling players in your minor league system, you were going to be a prime target. Lucky for my Sacramento team, we did some spring cleaning and got rid of half of our farms system. Some people thought I knew all of this was going to happen and that's why some farm systems were bare. That isn't true. When we cleaned out our farm, it was way before the Giants or Mexico were even brought up. KNOCK KNOCK!

"Come in!" I say. Joe, the Spartans GM, walks in.

"You wanted to see me?" He says as he shuts the door behind him.

"Yea, have a seat." He takes a seat in front of my desk. "As you might have already guessed, at the moment I am the Commissioner of baseball." Joe gave me a look as if he was saying 'DUH' on his mind. "Anyways, with this expansion going on and needed to help schedule the season, I'm gonna need you to take charge of the team until things smooth out. Even though I'm still owner of the team, I need to focus on MLB affairs rather then focusing on just this team. Since we're doing good by...oh, winning the World Series for the passed two years, I think I'm ready to pass the power onto you until we get the commissioner post figured out. Can I count on you?" I ask. He doesn't answer right away though.

"Ye....yea! Yea, yes you can Mr. Emigh. I'm sorry, this caught me off guard and..." I chuckle a little bit.

"It's ok. I know you'll do a good job though. Right now I've only made one deal by acquiring a new catcher but other then that, we'll have another returning team this year." I pause for a moment as he takes this all in. "I'm giving you full power, Joe. Take control and do what you feel needs to be done to this team to return to the post season. Ok?"

"Yea, that sounds good!" He stands up and shakes my hand. "Thank you, Dennis. I won't let you down!" He says, grinning ear to ear.

"That's what I like to hear. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to call the Yankees and the Cubs back to tell them to stop their crying." He laughs as he heads out the door.

-----

I couldn't believe it! I was finally taking over the Spartans, dare I say, Just like a real General Manager! This was all too exciting for me as I entered my office. Sitting down at my desk, I didn't know what to do first, even though there wasn't much to do at the moment. The team doesn't get together until the end of the month so I'm free for about roughly two weeks before I actually get to work.

From my office, I had a somewhat good view of the ball park. I walked over to the window and looked out. Right now, workers were working on the new bottle out in center field. Dennis decided that we were going to start using the bottle as a place to show off our championships and feel proud of them. I'm surprised Mt. Dew allowed us to do that. Then again, I think once you step into Mt. Dew Park, you know who owns it. As I look towards the outfield, I start thinking about something I came across the other day. While I was cleaning my desk out, I found an old piece of paper back from 2000 about how the stadium was built. I get into my drawer, sift through the papers and finally find it, sitting on the bottom. I scan over it and see that this stadium was built in such a way that we could still build onto it. I pick up the phone and dial the number on the top of the page. I had a plan.

"Hello this is the Mt. Dew corporation." A nice lady answered who sounded like she was only in her 20's. Ever since 2007 and the economy took a dive, someone bought out the Mt. Dew division of Pepsi and turned it into it's own brand.

"Hi there. My name is Joe Dipaola, General Manager of the Sacramento Spartans. Can I have whoever is in charge of the stadium?" I ask.

"Certainly, one moment please." She puts me on hold. It was filled with Mt. Dew commercials such as the famous Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal commercial.

"Hello this is Martin, how can I help you?" The man answers.

"Yea, this is the General Manager of the Sacramento Spartans, Joe Dipaola. How are you today?" I ask.

"Good Joe. What can I do for you?" He asks.

"I had a quick question about the park. I found this sheet in my desk about the park and it says that we can add more seating. I'd like to know what it would take to possibly add 10,000 seats?"

"Well it wouldn't take much. First off we'd need to decide where the seats go because not all seats are the same. Then we'd need to order the seats, then install them. If you were to add more bleacher seats, those would be cheaper. If you wanted to add onto the grandstands, that may be a bit more." Martin explains.

"Ok. Is it possible to do it during the season?"

"As long as we have four days. That means we'd have to order the seats during the home games then start installing them the moment the last out is played."

"Alright, thank you Martin. Since the team won the World Series twice, I was looking to make this stadium a bit bigger. I'll write down what you told me today and I should be getting back to you during the season."

"Ok Joe, that sounds good to me. Have a great day."

"You too Martin. Good bye."
